The official account for Tekken on X (previously known as Twitter) issued a statement to express regret over the release strategy for the Playable Character Year 1 Pass and the Genmaji Temple DLC. In this update, Bandai Namco outlined two key actions it plans to implement based on player feedback.
To begin with, if you’ve purchased the Playable Character Year 1 Pass, you will automatically gain access to the winter Battle Stage DLC, eliminating the need for an additional purchase. This upgrade now means that the Year 1 Pass includes both the Battle Stage DLC and an early 72-hour access to new characters such as Eddy, Lidia, Heihachi, along with an additional character yet to be announced. Additionally, players will receive the Kinjin avatar skin. Furthermore, as a way to acknowledge past oversights and compensate players, the Tekken team will be granting 500 Tekken Coins. To claim your coins, you must log into Tekken 8 online during the period of October 29 to November 26, 2024. For reference, 500 Tekken Coins aligns with the price of the Genmaji Temple DLC.
This situation sparked controversy primarily due to the pervasive microtransaction system employed in the game. Microtransactions have long been a hot topic in the gaming community; many players feel it reflects a money-grabbing approach by developers, resembling aspects of real-world gambling. The high cost of Tekken 8 only intensifies these concerns. The outrage stemmed from the fact that players who had already invested in the game and the Year 1 Pass were required to pay an additional fee for yet another DLC stage. However, the aftermath has seen a wave of positive feedback from players who are pleasantly surprised to see Bandai Namco responding to their concerns and striving to improve the player experience.
Tekken 8 is now available on PS5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC.
