Revamping a Classic: The Development of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven
Transforming an iconic game from its 2D origins on the Super Famicom into a modern 3D remake for contemporary gaming platforms like the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PS5 presents a unique set of challenges. Square Enix has embraced this task with the release of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, available globally now. Siliconera had the opportunity to delve deeper into the development process with Producer Shinichi Tatsuke, exploring the journey behind this ambitious remake.
Influences from Previous Versions
Jenni Lada: The original Romancing SaGa 2 has undergone various adaptations, including a remastered version for mobile and console platforms that expanded its reach globally. How did this remaster shape the development of the 3D remake?
Shinichi Tatsuke: While the goals of the remaster and the remake differ, we incorporated several elements from the remaster that resonate well with fans. For instance, we preserved the Ninja and Diviner classes, along with certain events and a hidden boss that unlocks post-game. These features maintain continuity while appealing to both returning players and newcomers alike.
Preserving Legacy Features
Romancing SaGa 2 is celebrated for its innovative gameplay mechanics, including empire funding, heir selection, and the complex narrative that turns former heroes into villains. What design choices were made in the remake to enhance these cherished features?
Tatsuke: Our primary focus was to honor the quintessential elements of the SaGa series—such as its storytelling, world-building, and character systems like Inheritance and Glimmers—while revitalizing the battle and character development mechanics. This approach ensures that we retain the distinctive flavor of the SaGa series while delivering an experience that feels modern and accessible to today’s RPG enthusiasts.
Balancing Gameplay Experience
Jenni Lada: What adjustments were made to ensure that the various difficulty levels and character progression systems in Romancing SaGa 2 felt both fair and rewarding? Were there any specific techniques in character building that stood out to you during development?
Tatsuke: The addition of difficulty settings was a strategic decision aimed at engaging both veterans of the original and new players. We meticulously fine-tuned the Hard (Classic) mode to deliver challenging battles akin to those in the original game. In contrast, the Normal setting caters to seasoned RPG players, while Casual mode is tailored for those interested in narrative over combat. This tiered approach enables diverse player engagement.
Dynamic Choices
As players explore the world of Romancing SaGa 2, they will encounter a variety of dynamic choices that can significantly alter their gameplay experience. This is a hallmark of the SaGa series, and we aimed to enhance that aspect in the remake. By integrating a multifaceted decision-making process, players can shape their heroes’ destinies in ways that were not possible in the original game.
