In a recent announcement, Nintendo released a press statement in Japan addressing its customers about phishing scams that exploit the company’s email domains. The gaming giant confirmed that various unauthorized third-party entities have been disseminating phishing emails using Nintendo’s email addresses, such as [email protected].
In light of this, Nintendo provided guidance on how to handle potential phishing threats. Since these harmful emails do not originate from Nintendo itself, the company is unable to prevent their distribution. Instead, Nintendo recommends that users reach out to their email service providers for assistance in filtering out phishing messages. Additionally, they are urging their Japanese audience to file reports regarding these malicious emails with the Japanese Council of Anti-Phishing.
Nintendo cautioned users against blocking all emails from [email protected], as this could result in missing important communications from the authentic Nintendo Account system. If customers accidentally submit their login details on a phishing site, Nintendo strongly advises them to change their passwords immediately and activate Two-Factor Authentication for enhanced security.
This warning coincides with the transition to Nintendo Accounts as the primary account management system for users on Switch consoles, especially after discontinuing the Nintendo Network ID used for older systems like the Wii U and 3DS. During a Q&A with investors in May 2024, Nintendo also confirmed that the successor console for the Switch will continue to utilize Nintendo Accounts.
