I appreciate your patience as I present my thoughts. I genuinely mean no offense. Like many fans, I absolutely adored The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I immersed myself in that enchanting world for weeks, frequently returning whenever I wanted to unwind. The same excitement surged when Tears of the Kingdom debuted. However, when I ponder the series’ future, I can’t help but feel that those titles shouldn’t be our sole inspiration. Instead, I believe that the next chapter for The Legend of Zelda lies with the recently launched Switch title Echoes of Wisdom.
In numerous respects, Echoes of Wisdom feels akin to a top-down Zelda game that has taken inspiration from the groundbreaking success of Breath of the Wild. While Hyrule has always provided an expansive world to roam, it didn’t always allow for a truly non-linear experience. Although Echoes of Wisdom doesn’t grant you absolute freedom, the inclusion of the Tri Rod and your creativity offers significant flexibility in overcoming the game’s challenges. This aspect plays a crucial role in what has made recent Zelda titles so invigorating and should undeniably remain part of the experience.
Echoes of Wisdom effectively demonstrates how this system translates exceptionally well into a top-down perspective, potentially even surpassing the brilliance of Link Between Worlds. While navigating through Echoes of Wisdom, one thought crossed my mind. I found myself missing the classic dungeons that have been largely absent from recent 3D iterations. Although Breath of the Wild recaptured the thrill of exploration reminiscent of the original Legend of Zelda, it sacrificed the iconic dungeon designs. Echoes of Wisdom successfully reintegrates dungeons in a versatile and engaging format.
One of the standout elements of Breath of the Wild was its expansive world. That unforgettable moment of leaving the Great Plateau only to discover it was merely a fraction of the vast realm was remarkable. Tears of the Kingdom expanded the map even further, but the novelty wore off quickly. Doubling down on size for the next installment likely won’t dazzle players anymore. Personally, I wouldn’t want a world much larger than what we experienced in Tears of the Kingdom.
I commend Nintendo and the Zelda developers for ensuring that the worlds in both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom felt purposeful and populated. However, Echoes of Wisdom has sparked my curiosity about the potential of a more compact world. We don’t need to revert entirely to the past. Echoes of Wisdom creates a world that feels vast and worthy of exploration while also providing a more structured approach. By not overwhelming players with a sprawling map filled with secrets, each discovery feels more significant.
The era of The Legend of Zelda on the Switch has been nothing short of remarkable, yet this new formula risks becoming as stagnant as previous iterations. The franchise must continuously innovate, and there are insights to glean from Echoes of Wisdom. Streamlining the open world size without losing its organic, non-linear essence is essential, and reviving those beloved dungeons filled with puzzles will enhance our gaming experience. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom skillfully walks this line, and its principles hold great promise for future releases.
