With three mainline RPG installments and counting, it’s high time to explore every Dragon Age title and identify the standout companions. I’ve decided to analyze each game individually and share my insights on the top companion from each one. While each title features remarkable BioWare characters, these companions shine brightest in terms of storytelling, romance, and overall impact across the series.
Top Companion in Dragon Age: Origins: Morrigan
Choosing the best companion from the inaugural Dragon Age game is no small task, as this installment boasts an incredible ensemble of characters. However, if forced to select just one, my choice would be Morrigan. This notorious witch possesses a rich narrative and arguably the most fascinating character development in the game.
Without delving into spoilers, her arc takes unexpected turns regardless of the choices you make. Additionally, her personality is magnetic, embodying the philosophy of “less is more.” For players who appreciate a more elusive character, Morrigan stands out as an exceptional companion to have by your side.
Top Companion in Dragon Age 2: Varric
If choosing an overall champion among companions throughout this fantasy BioWare saga, Varric would be my pick. He first appears in Dragon Age 2 and continues his role in subsequent titles. There’s a clear reason why BioWare consistently brings Varric back, especially when compared to the diverse range of party members.
This witty Dwarf is one of the most entertaining characters in gaming history. Varric is known for his clever remarks, providing much-needed humor in an otherwise serious fantasy landscape. He is an integral part of this RPG franchise, much like Garrus is to Mass Effect.
Top Companion in Dragon Age: Inquisition: Dorian
To avoid repeating Varric yet again in this third main installment of the series, I’d highlight Dorian as the standout companion. Much like Varric, Dorian brings humor and charm to the table. However, his character beautifully illustrates the classic adage of not judging a book by its cover.
Those who invest time in understanding Dorian will uncover a deeply written and poignant backstory. His seemingly simple exterior masks a rich emotional history, making Dorian one of the most complex characters in Dragon Age: Inquisition, whether or not you engage in a romance with him.
