Bloober Team recently unveiled a new Dev Diaries video that delves into the character of James Sunderland from the iconic Silent Hill 2, in light of the launch of the remake. Featured in this insightful segment are Creative Director and Lead Designer Mateusz Lenart, Lead Writer Andrzej Madrzak, Senior Narrative Designer Barbara Kciuk, Lead Character Artist Pablo Poliakov, and Senior 3D Animator Jakub Zych, all contributing to a discussion about the development journey and character insights. Additionally, the video includes comments from James’ voice actor, Luke Roberts, regarding his interpretation of the role.
The video begins by establishing James Sunderland as an ordinary individual confronted with extraordinary dilemmas in Silent Hill 2. Lenart elaborated on how Bloober Team aimed to honor the original while infusing their own creative elements. This segment particularly emphasizes the evolution of James’ appearance as he navigates the town, highlighting growth in his facial hair, the wear and tear on his clothing, and the increasing signs of his fatigue. The design team articulates how the combat mechanics serve to illustrate that James is just an “office worker,” rather than a seasoned fighter.
Around the four-minute mark, the spotlight turns towards Luke Roberts and his embodiment of James Sunderland, featuring insights into his voice acting and motion capture experiences with Bloober Team. Roberts shares his experiences and feelings while portraying this complex character.
Silent Hill 2 is now available on the PS5 and PC globally, with a one-year exclusivity on Sony consoles. Players can also access the original title on PS2, Xbox, and PC, in addition to finding it in the Silent Hill HD Collection for PS3 and Xbox 360.
