Meaning of 996

One of New Balance’s representative models is the 996. Born in 1988 as a running shoe that could be used on public roads, it celebrates its 35th anniversary this year (2023). It has been loved for a long time as a steady seller for its feel and design as well as its ability to be worn while running and in everyday life. For reference, the first model was the 990, which appeared in 1982, and was named this way at the time to mean “990 out of 1000 points.” 996 is a model that has since evolved into its third generation, and the mid window uses ENCAP structure and C-CAP to provide good cushioning and high stability. Originally made only in the United States, it is now also made in Asia and is a model that continues to be constantly upgraded.

35th anniversary model

By applying the design of the original model that appeared in 1988, the N logo on the inside of the shoe disappeared. There is a detachable N logo on the outside, which can be attached using a shoelace if necessary. When there is no N logo, the embroidered New Balance logo is revealed. Vintage-style processing is added to the sole of the shoe to bring out the old feel. There are two colors: gray and navy.
