‘The screen bends and folds.’ What is the future of car interiors drawn by LG?

LG Electronics introduced the next-generation vehicle display and digital cockpit concept.

LG Electronics recently created a new category called ‘Mobility Labworks Series’ on the official website of the VS business division, which is in charge of the electronics business. Three types of vehicle displays and two types of digital cockpits that have never been revealed before, including rollable, flexible, and foldable, were unveiled.

First, the ‘Min & Max Display’ is equipped with a ‘Pillar to Pillar P-OLED’ display that integrates three screens, including the instrument panel, central information display, and passenger display, into one. The screen is curved in an L shape, allowing users to selectively use the wide or narrow side depending on the situation or purpose. For example, if you need a lot of information about your destination, you can select ‘Max mode’, which uses a wide surface, and when driving on a familiar road, you can select ‘Min mode’, which displays only minimal information.

Next, the ‘Pop & Fold display’ improves space utilization by hiding three screens in the thin dashboard and exposing them when the user wants. There is an 18-inch display using foldable P-OLED technology in the center, and two screens on either side that rotate 90 degrees are used as the instrument panel and passenger seat display, respectively.

Lastly, the ‘Flex & Slide display’ uses P-OLED to adjust the degree of screen bending according to the passengers’ situation or the content being played. The entire unbent screen can be used for watching videos or navigation, and if the screen is bent as much as possible, the bottom can be used as a keyboard and the top can be used as a search screen.

In addition, LG Electronics also unveiled two types of digital cockpit concepts. Various technologies were applied here, including displays, connectivity, and HMI (Human Machine Interface). In particular, you can get a glimpse of the areas that LG Electronics is developing, such as rollable displays, driver and passenger monitoring systems, and 5G communication-based V2X.

It is unusual for LG Electronics to reveal a concept for an electronic product that has not been mass-produced. The industry predicts that through this move, LG will promote LG Electronics’ various technological capabilities not only to automakers but also to general users.
