Director Kang Je-gyu, who is ready to meet the audience for the first time in 8 years since ‘Jangsu Merchant’ (2015), said, “After ‘Taegeukgi’, we tried to prepare a science fiction film, but it fell through. The future is often done in Hollywood,”he said. He revealed the reason for highlighting the past, saying, “I think I’ve become interested in the past and the precious footsteps I’ve lived in.”

At the same time, director Kang Je-gyu said that he hopes people will have time to examine their lives through ‘1947 Boston.’

On this day, he emphasized that ‘the past is the future’ and said, “You may think the past is old-fashioned and uninteresting, but history contains many precious stories.”He added, “Looking at the lives of people from the past, you can look back on yourself and ask, ‘Am I living well now?’ “And these stories give us strength and courage to live in the present,” he emphasized.

Ha Jung-woo plays the role of Son Ki-jeong, a gold medalist at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and a Korean marathon legend. First, he jokingly said, “The first thought I had while watching the movie was when Im Si-wan and I were caught on screen together, I thought, ‘I feel old.’”

Ha Jung-woo aroused curiosity by saying that he always created characters from himself, but this work was different. He said he had a lot of conversations with director Kang Je-gyu to portray a real person. Ha Jung-woo said, “While acting, I kept thinking, ‘How would I feel if it were teacher Son Ki-jeong?’”

Next, Ha Jung-woo, who recalled the time when he appeared on the podium as Son Ki-jeong, said, “My heart was very heavy because it felt like I was actually experiencing it, not on a set. I felt a solemnity that I had never felt while filming before,”giving an idea of his extraordinary sense of responsibility.

In response, director Kang Je-gyu said that Ha Jung-woo came up with various ideas about his role and function, and added, “I opined that it would be important to express the heart of a person who encourages someone while looking at the runner. This good idea was reflected in the movie.””I also talked with Ha Jung-woo and Im Si-wan to create the movie in detail. This is the point I am most satisfied with,” he said.

Im Si-wan played the role of Seo Yun-bok, a national representative of the 1947 Boston Marathon and dreaming of becoming the next Son Ki-jeong. For this work, Im Si-wan constantly studied everything from the posture of a marathoner to his behavioral patterns and facial expressions so that he could naturally fit into the body, and made special efforts to lower his body fat to 6% by combining diet and exercise to achieve the physique of a marathoner.

In particular, Im Si-wan emphasized that he went into filming with the ‘mindset of a national representative’ from the beginning to the end. He said, “I thought that having a real person in itself was a task that no one could do. I thought I should approach the work with a sense of responsibility. As Seo Yun-bok was the first athlete to enter an international competition wearing the Taegeuk symbol, I was determined to represent the country. “I did it,” he said emphatically.

In addition, Im Si-wan surprised people by saying that he learned how to run a marathon professionally 2-3 months before filming began, and that he did not stop exercising even during filming to maintain muscle tone.

Meanwhile, Ha Jung-woo and Im Si-wan, who are working together for the first time in this work, exude great chemistry. Im Si-wan expressed his affection, saying, “I felt like I met a reliable older brother. In the drama, it was a mentor-mentee relationship, but we were closer than that,”and Ha Jung-woo said, “I watched Si-wan’s efforts to portray Seo Yun-bok from the side, and he did an amazing job. “Mr. Seo Yun-bok will also like it,” he responded.

The highlight of the work is definitely the Boston Marathon, and any Korean can’t help but feel warm just by watching it. Im Si-wan, who digested this, recalled, “When working on any task, I always think to myself, ‘This moment will never come back,’ to avoid wasting anything. I acted with the mindset that I had to work as hard as I could.”

Im Si-wan then goes on to say that although it is not such a great event, as he participates in small marathons, the simple and clear thought of ‘let’s finish the race’ dominates. “I think he was like that this time too,” he added.

Lastly, Ha Jung-woo asked for a lot of interest in Korean films, including ‘1947 Boston.’ In particular, he suffered the pain of a box office failure this summer with ‘Unofficial Operation’, saying, “Because these things have happened while filming movies, I just want to do it well and in a healthy way.”He added, “The absolute number of audiences has not yet recovered. Several works are gaining momentum.””I hope we can create good synergy by combining them,” he said.

‘1947 Boston’ will be released on the 27th.
