[SC Site] “The late Seo Yun-bok would also like it”… Ha Jung-woo
[Sports Chosun Reporter Ahn So-yoon] ‘1947 Boston’ Ha Jung-woo and Im Si-wan unfold on the screen the glorious day in which they shed precious drops of sweat.
On the afternoon of the 11th, a press and distribution preview of the movie ‘1947 Boston’ was held at Lotte Cinema at the entrance to Konkuk University, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul. Actors Ha Jung-woo, Im Si-wan, Kim Sang-ho, and director Kang Je-gyu attended the event.
The movie ‘1947 Boston’, which will be released on September 27, depicts the challenges and thrilling journey of marathon runners to compete in international competitions wearing the Taegeuk symbol for the first time since liberation in 1947. Director Kang Je-gyu, who directed ‘Taegukgi’, ‘My Way’, and ‘Jangsu Store’, took the lead.
‘1947 Boston’ contains the great challenge of Korea’s first national marathon runners. Director Kang Je-gyu said, “Aren’t there many very attractive sports events other than the marathon? I thought that the mindset of a marathoner, who runs toward the 42.195 tunnel without any equipment or tools, matches the way humans live while challenging themselves with extreme passion. A unique story that only the marathon provides. “I really wanted to make it into a movie because there was a movie,” he said, explaining his motivation for directing.
Ha Jung-woo was a gold medalist at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and transformed into coach Son Ki-jeong, who trained juniors. He attempted to play the role of his first teacher through ‘1947 Boston’ and said, “When I was in the same frame as Im Si-wan, I thought, ‘I have had enough for my age.’”
Recalling the preparation process for filming, he said, “I talked a lot with the director about what kind of person Mr. Ki-Jeong Son was. The beginning of my words and the beginning of my actions was Mr. Ki-Jeong Son. In each take, I asked, ‘What kind of mind did he have, what emotions did he have?’ I went into filming with that thought in mind. As those thoughts built up one by one, I couldn’t easily fall off my feet during the first scene, the prologue, the rookie Berlin Olympics scene, and the medal award scene. At that time, my heart was really heavy, and I felt a solemnity that I had never felt before while filming.”said.
Im Si-wan, who played the role of Seo Yun-bok, a marathoner who dreams of becoming the next Son Ki-jeong, said, “First of all, I thought that I should never be a person to him by taking the place of a real thing. As for my sense of responsibility, Seo Yun-bok will participate in his first international competition wearing the Taegeuk symbol. “I went out, didn’t I? Even though I just played a character in the work, I also participated from the first filming to the last with the mindset of representing the country wearing the Taegeuk symbol.”
He also mentioned that efforts were made to represent real marathoners. Im Si-wan recalled, “I had to show running professionally, so I received professional training two to three months before starting the project. I learned and received training from the coach in between filming until the end of the project.”
He also said, “I lived on chicken breast salad even before filming started. I had to exercise every day, and I wanted my muscles to look firm and not look saggy, so I tried to maintain muscle bulge by exercising in between cuts.” “It’s not true, but while working out and trying to look as similar to Seo Yun-bok as possible, I ended up with 6% body fat. I remember being amazed when I saw the number 6% for the first time in my life.”
In particular, in ‘1947 Boston’, Ha Jung-woo and Im Si-wan work together to show off their strong priest chemistry. Ha Jung-woo said of Im Si-wan, “He looked like a real athlete, and when I watched him from the side, I felt that he put in a lot of effort.”He added, “I watched the time Si-wan spent preparing for this role from the side, so I was naturally moved while filming the competition scenes. “It’s here. I saw the finished version for the first time today, and I think teacher Seo Yun-bok will like it because Im Si-wan did such a great job,” he said, praising it.
Im Si-wan said, “I worked with Ha Jung-woo on my first film, and it felt like I had met a dependable older brother. He depended on me a lot during filming. We had a mentor-mentee relationship in the movie, but in reality, he was like a closer brother. Especially while working on the movie.””You know a lot more about the world than I do. I filmed it with the expectation of, ‘When and where will an unexpected point of laughter come from my brother?’” he responded.
Kim Sang-ho played Baek Nam-hyeon, a local coordinator and financial guarantor who would help the two people on site. He said, “It may have helped me that I didn’t have a lot of material when acting. He helped me with parts that I found interesting after reading the script, but he didn’t help me blindly. While acting, I felt attracted to the character in the script. “There were a lot of points,” he said.
Lastly, ‘1947 Boston’ will show the power of drama as well as thrilling catharsis to this Chuseok audience. Ha Jung-woo said, “I hope that our film will deliver good synergy and be of some help so that audiences can visit theaters like before. I hope that ‘Dr. I hoped.
