What does ‘falling horse’ mean… From animal abuse to controversy over distortion of history [Issue S]

While the controversy over the filming technique for the falling horse scene, which seriously violates animal rights, has not subsided, this time the original author protested because the king’s falling horse incident, which had nothing to do with historical facts, was depicted in the drama.

KBS2’s ‘Goryeo Khitan War’, which aired on the 14th, contained a confrontation between Kang Gam-chan (Choi Soo-jong) and Hyeonjong (Kim Dong-jun) over the initiation of local reform. After ordering Gang Gam-chan to leave Gaegyeong, King Hyeonjong could not control his anger, so he screamed while driving his horse, and suffered a fall from his horse while trying to avoid a cart that blocked his path.

However, King Hyeonjong’s fall from the horse has absolutely no historical basis. After the broadcast, viewers poured out criticism about Hyunjong’s character expression and historical research. In particular, regarding King Hyeonjong’s falling horse scene, he raised his voice by saying, “Is this historical research?”and “It’s like the unfolding of a drama.”

The original author also directly expressed his frustration about the falling horse scene. Gil Seung-soo, the original author of ‘Goryeo Khitan War’, wrote on his blog after the broadcast, “I should have been fully familiar with the historical facts and received sufficient advice before writing the script, but I don’t think I was sufficiently familiar with them.”.

He continued, “I explained Hyeonjong’s character well to the production team, but in the end, the script writer used it however he wanted and this led to this failure. They are making a fool out of someone who can be considered the most famous soldier in Korean history. “The script writer’s problem is bigger than we thought,” he added.

This is not the first time that a falling horse scene has become an issue during the filming of a KBS historical drama.

Last year, KBS’s other epic historical drama ‘Taejong Lee Bang-won’ On the broadcast, the scene of Lee Seong-gye (Kim Young-cheol) falling from a horse was broadcast. After the broadcast, allegations arose that in the process of filming the scene, a rope was tied to the horse’s front legs, causing the horse to fall on purpose, and that the animal was abused using tools even though it was not intended for breeding or training. The horse eventually died, and three members of the production team, including producer Mr. Kim, were eventually handed over to trial.

Three members of the production team, including KBS producer Mr. Kim, who were indicted, were each sentenced to a fine of 10 million won on the 17th, and KBS, who was also indicted because the dual punishment rule was applied, was sentenced to a fine of 5 million won.

KBS ‘Taejong Lee Bang-won’ When the controversy over the falling horse scene arose, he issued an apology and said, “Filming the falling horse scene is a very difficult shoot.”If you create a similar model or use computer graphics, the realism of the expression may be reduced, and if you shoot it yourself, it is a difficult shooting that can threaten the safety of the horses, actors, and filming staff.

Accordingly, viewers are questioning the fact that KBS, which received attention about the falling horse scene in ‘Taejong Lee Bang-won’, included a high-level falling horse scene in ‘Khitan War of Goryeo, while distorting history.. Writer Gil Seung-soo also expressed his frustration by saying in “Taejong Lee Bang-won”that he had a hard time because of his words, and then fell from a horse again.”
